Biographical Details
Bill Glasgow moved to Queensland 38 years ago. He is currently employed at Beef City, about 40 kilometres west of Toowoomba, but has employment experience in the beef industry in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia, and as far north as Rockhampton and west to Charleville in Queensland.
He has been plaiting for about 20 years, which started by accident when he went into a saddler’s shop to buy a plaited belt and walked out with a Ron Edwards hand book on belt plaiting, a pair of nickel rings and enough lace to make a 36inch belt. Two years later, he branched into whip making, using Edward’s book to plait a four strand red hide whip. Later, following an R. M. Williams 2 day school, he plaited his first 12 strand kangaroo hide whip which was taken from the Scobie patterns. Since then Bill has worked closely with Maurice Doohan, whose expertise in this craft allowed Bill to begin to understand just what makes a good whip work and what goes where, and he continues to pass on tips today. Bill is a member of the Australian Plaiters and Whipmakers Association. He has exhibited whips and belts and had some success winning competitions at Glen Innes, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Dame Mary Durack Award.

Workshop Details
Spend four days working with Bill and complete a working whip. You will be taught how to cut out fillers and a four strand belly, then move on to the intricacies of plaiting. The four stand belly should be complete by day two, when you will begin to cut out and fit a bolster and commence an eight strand overlay. When the plaiting overlay is complete, an eight strand half plait handle will be cut out and plaited, and completed with a Turks head tied to the handle, and finally attached to the whip.
