Biographical Details

John Trier was born in England but moved to Australia with his family while he was still young. After finishing his education, he began working on the land, first as a jackeroo, and

later working his way up to management positions and eventually owning his own

property. During a recession in cattle prices he turned to using cattle horn, crafting various pieces from this readily

available and otherwise disposable medium. It was the beginning of a remarkable career. During his early working years, he studied jewellery making at Brisbane CAE, and enrolled in various TAFE and metalworking courses, but he remains essentially self-taught craftsman.

Over the years he gradually refined his pieces with the addition of silver and pewter, and this has developed today into a classic style and elegance which is uniquely his. John was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1995. His commissions include a horn box to replace the tobacco box of 1713 for the Parish of St. Margaret and St. John of Westminster and the horn for a Millennium Cup for the Worshipful Company of Horners established in London in the mid 13th Century.
