About Us
Garden Hill at Lost World is a rural cultural and heritage precinct in the Lost World Valley. It incorporates an art gallery for local and visiting artists’ exhibitions and a museum to present and display bush culture and rural artefacts.
This block has been called Garden Hill since the late 1800s. A local historian, Ray Stephens, who died many years ago visited us soon after we had purchased it and explained that it had nce
been the location of a vegetable market garden operated by a Chinese man. He prospered by selling fresh produce to the local timber-getters. At that time quite a large community of people lived close by. He also pointed out that the local dray road to Beaudesert passed along the present driveway through the various sheds, information supported by the discovery of a ompressed road base when the new road was being constructed.
We have lived here for about 33 years. During this time we have collected and preserved objects and buildings which are culturally and historically significant to the district. A museum, gallery, café and cold climate garden are all significant parts of Garden Hill.
These buildings form the nucleus of the gallery and display area:- Collins’ Nindooinbah wagon shed, Dunns’ hay shed, Klan’s slab dairy hut, Cashell’s slab house, Ike Alexander’s dairy and Ward’s hay shed form a precinct pleasing on the eye. Each shed represents a part of the early architectural development of the district. Most were in a state of serious disrepair. They have been upgraded using recycled materials from various places, including dumps, but all was sourced from within the Scenic Rim region. The results, and the ongoing reconstruction and pgrading, have been achieved using a wonderful team of local tradesmen, each of whom used local businesses for supplies.
